Our Adventure Camping in St. Regis, Montana – 1 Mishap and All the Delicious Huckleberries!

On our way to Yellowstone with Leigh Anne’s kids, we stopped for a couple of days for some camping in St. Regis at Campground St. Regis to help break up the drive and explore an area we were robbed of checking out earlier in the year thanks to getting Covid (but thats a whole different story 😛). It was an awesome spot with a nice pool that we cooled off in a LOT!

I don’t think we’ve had a trip that didn’t involve some sort of mishap, and this trip proved to be no different by slapping us with it right from the get go. The temperature was in the upper 90’s, so the air conditioner was a must for keeping things comfortable and most importantly, to keep Rus from cooking in the trailer. We got the electric plugged in and the A/C turned on. Then after a few minutes, everything shut off, and I found the surge protector giving us some choice words.

The error message was no joke. This thing was super hot to the touch 🔥. We let it cool and then tried again. BUT, we kept getting the same result despite the unit not being directly in the sun or anything else that might cause it to get hot. We were forced to chance things for the rest of the trip by not using the power protector, crossing our fingers we wouldn’t have a power surge at any of the places we were camping. The unit we have is the Southwire 30 Amp Surge Guard , which had worked well up until this point. To Southwire’s credit, I got in touch with their customer service after the trip, and they said it must have had a defect to cause that behavior, so they promptly shipped us a new one. Luckily, that was the end of the power mishaps on the trip, but I was mighty nervous (to the point I disconnected our power) when we started having lightning storms at our next stop in West Yellowstone since we didn’t have a working surge protector plugged in.

One new and fun thing we did on this stop was to tell scary stories 👻 around the campfire. My sister gave us a book where you create a monster by choosing its head, body, and lower half and then the story is crafted based on those choices. Below, you can see the creature we concocted. There is a video floating around of me reading the story, but Leigh Anne said it’s being reserved for blackmail material should something like that ever be needed 😆!

Huckleberry, huckleberry, huckleberry!!! Did we mention huckleberries?! They are one of the great things this part of the country is known for. You can find them in just about anything (cue Bubba from Forest Gump going on for days about all the ways). We had huckleberries in shakes and Italian ice (for me, ol’ non-dairy Harry) as a cold, sweet treat. We even had huckleberries in our favorite libation from a local whiskey maker. We were surprised to find that huckleberries paired well with ghost peppers for a fiery hot sauce, which proved to be a great, but twisted, experience of pleasure for the taste buds and burning heat for your entire mouth!
