Bone River Oyster Stout

Boondockin’: Willapa Brewing Co.

Since we left the Happy Horse Farm a day earlier than we had scheduled, we needed a place to stay for a single night between the farm and our next destination. Enter Harvest Hosts, a membership program for self-contained RVers to boondock overnight in spots like wineries, breweries and other unique places. Here’s a link to our referral code so you can get 15% off of the membership price if you decide to join.

Getting to camp out at a brewery was a fun experience on our new adventure. Willapa Brewing Co. is in a small town called South Bend, Washington, which sits along the Willapa River and was in the perfect location for us to set up the trailer for the night. We got to enjoy delicious beer (including one brewed in oyster brine!), oyster shooters, and mouth-watering pizza while we were there. They also had some great grinders that we had for a late lunch the next day before packing up and hitting the road again.

Across the street from the brewery, sitting on a small patch of grass, was an old jail building. Talk about creepy! I’m sure there are plenty of stories to be told about it. I think Harry was probably grateful it was locked so I couldn’t throw him inside!

The next day, we got up early and rode our bikes into town to get coffee at one of the cutest coffee shops this side of the Cascades, Elixir Coffee. Not only did the coffee hit the spot, the views of the river were amazing. We even got to see the World’s Largest Oyster!

Yeah yeah, I know.  That’s not a REAL oyster. But do you know what is? Grilled oysters from River View Dining. Oh my god, y’all. Not only were they as big as my hand, they tasted better than any grilled oyster I’d ever eaten (and we’ve had our fair share of oysters – grilled, raw, fried … you name it!). The fried oysters were tasty as well. I wasn’t the biggest fan of their clam chowder, but I’m not sure any food could follow those oysters anyway!

You know what else was a fun experience? Our first holding tank dump. The Happy Horse Farm didn’t have a sewage hook-up, so we found a rest area en route to the brewery to pull in to clean out our tanks. While we were just brainstorming this whole nomad plan, I told Harry that I would take care of all things inside the trailer and help with everything BUT dumping the tanks because EW, am I right?! I’ve since backed down from that stance and help when needed but let’s just say, we should be buying Costco sized boxes of rubber gloves. It’s a dirty job, but we still gotta do it.
