Sun Outdoors Canyonlands Gateway

Moab, Utah

A full-hookup Moab RV option north of town that gave us two needed recovery weeks, but between tight sites, resort-fee pricing, and bad-smelling water, it is a fallback pick for us.

Review

This was not our favorite Moab RV park experience. Honestly, 1.5 out of 5 trailers feels a little generous, but it did give us the thing we needed at the time: availability for a longer stay with full hookups while my feet recovered. This was the only place we could find that fit our needs, so we made it work.

We stayed in Site 37, which they call their Standard Full Hookup Pull Through RV Site. The biggest issue for us was how tight these interior sites felt. Our site was cramped enough that our neighbor’s sewer connection ran pretty much in the middle of our outdoor living space (what little there was) beside our picnic table. We also had someone knock on the trailer door early in the morning, asking us to move our truck in order for them to pull their trailer out of their site. This didn’t exactly help the “relax and recover” vibe we were going for. And when you go to drive in or out, you’d better hope the sites around you are empty. If they aren’t, you might just be staying put.

They do have some sites on the perimeter they call Premium Full Hookup Pull Through RV Sites. Those actually have a lot of space, are away from main fray, and open in the front out to the desert. See the gallery for a picture of these sites. They are quite a bit more expensive, but had we stayed in one of those, we probably would’ve had a completely different take on this place. These sites weren’t available when we booked, unfortunately.

Another bummer on this stay was the pool heater being broken for the first week. We were really looking forward to that as a way to relax and rehab. It was still nice when it wasn’t heated for dipping my feet in to”ice” them, but it was much more enjoyable once they eventually fixed the heater.

We used the laundry facilities. The room was clean and washers and dryers were both reasonably priced.

Their free Wi-Fi was fairly slow for us, but thankfully, our Starlink worked great.

The water was the weirdest of the many annoying issues here. After a few days, we started smelling a horrible rotten egg/sulfur odor from the kitchen sink. It stuck around after emptying the tank multiple times and even after using tank deodorizer. We had never had that problem before nor have we had it since. We think it’s fair to assume it was the water supply at the campground.

Pricing is another thing to be cognizant of. We did get a weekly discount, but Sun Outdoors properties charge a per-night resort fee that makes the advertised price look better than the final cost. We had stayed at a Sun Outdoors before, so we knew to expect it, but it’s still really annoying.

Would we stay here again? Maybe, and that maybe is holding a ton of weight there. It would likely only be a stop for us as a last resort or if we were able to snag one of the Premium Full Hookup Pull Through RV Sites.

Trailerability

Getting here is a piece of cake. Getting in/out of your site can be a real pain if you have one of the interior sites, depending on what neighbors are around. If you are towing anything with slides, outdoor gear, or a truck you need to park nearby, you should pay close attention to site size and location before booking.

Towmads Top Tips

  • Bring drinking water, and empty your tanks often. Not exactly sure what’s wrong with their water, if anything, but it stunk up our trailer every time the kitchen sink started to fill.
  • Try getting one of their Premium Full Hookup Pull Through RV Sites if you want a chance at enjoying your stay here, or better yet stay up the road at Utahraptor State Park.

Nearby Finds

Arches National Park

We did a scenic drive through Arches while we were in Moab. With the foot situation, this was more of a low-key “see what we can see from the truck” tour than a big hiking day, but Arches is still stunning even when you are taking it easy. We definitely left a lot on the list for next time.

Bonjour Bakery & Cafe

Bonjour became our standout coffee and lunch find in Moab. It was a nice place to work, had good coffee, delicious lunch options, and the kind of stop that helped balance out a not-so-great campground stay.

Moonflower Community Cooperative

Moonflower was a great grocery and food stop find for this stay. They have a nice little deli for delicious grab and go stuff. We also used Moonflower for specialty ingredients for fun Trailer Made meals, including a special pumpkin that ended up becoming part of one of our more memorable Moab dinners. For most of the basics and staples, we’d hit City Market (aka Kroger in disguise), but what we really enjoyed were our trips to Moonflower.

Proper Brewing Moab

Proper Brewing was a good Moab snack-and-beer stop for us. We liked the beers, and they had a really unique poutine which was rich enough to be memorable for Leigh Anne who is a poutine connoisseur. This is a good one to keep on the list for after a day around Moab.

Ye Ol’ Geezer Meat Shop

Ye Ol’ Geezer Meat Shop was one of our favorite nearby finds in Moab. We grabbed a nice ribeye steak, a couple of duck breasts, pork chops, and some bone marrow cuts. The ribeye dinner and later duck dinner both became part of the silver lining of staying put for two weeks.

Love Muffin Cafe

This was a recommendation from our friend, Rich, who never steers us wrong, and this did not disappoint. They had some unusual muffins, including a vegan peanut butter and quinoa one that definitely stuck with us. Their coffee and other breakfast food were spot on as well.

Slickrock Cinemas 3

Slickrock Cinemas 3 was a fun, low-key recovery activity. It has that small, old-school, local theater feel, and it gave us something easy to do in town when hiking was not really on the table. It also gave Leigh Anne another chance to feed her “Project Hail Mary” addiction.

Moab Tattoo

Leigh Anne wanted to get a tattoo to honor her dad who’d passed away about a decade ago. She found Kim at Moab Tattoo. She liked her and her work so much that she went back for a second in sesh before we left town.

How to Book

Sun Outdoors Canyonland Gateway Logo

Book directly through Sun Outdoors.

Two booking notes:

  1. Look closely at the site map and description as well as any available images or street views of the site you’re interested in to determine if the spot will work for you.
  2. Watch the final price. Sun Outdoors charges a per-night resort fee, a booking fee, plus a fee to actually get the spot you reserve, so the final price will be much higher than the advertised nightly rate makes it seem. The way Sun Outdoors nickels and dimes you is the absolute worst of corporate camping.
